Olympiacos stand-in Ben Hanley is chasing a podium finish in his debut Superleague Formula race after a strong qualifying performance put him fourth on the grid. Hanley - one of four British drivers competing this weekend - is deputising for regular Olympiacos driver Chris Van Der Drift, who suffered multiple injuries in an enormous accident at the previous round at Brands Hatch. Elliott overcame a late-race mistake during a restart to win the Pro All Stars Series South Labor Day Classic late-model event at North Wilkesboro Speedway, the first race held at the historic .625-mile asphalt oval in 14 years.
Denny Hamlin claimed his first pole position of the season in qualifying for Sunday's NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race at Atlanta Motor Speedway. The Joe Gibbs Racing driver set a fastest lap of 29.587s at an average speed of 187.380 mph, beating the previous benchmark set by Stewart Haas' Ryan Newman earlier in the session. Valentino Rossi reckons his lingering shoulder injury and Yamaha's straightline speed deficit are the main factors holding him back at Misano this weekend, rather than any issues with the leg he broke at Mugello. The world champion has yet to get back up to peak performance as he continues to recover from the leg injury that ruled him out of the middle part of the season, and the shoulder damage sustained in a Motocross crash in April.
Randy de Puniet was thrilled to be back among the frontrunners in qualifying at Misano, less than two months after breaking his leg in a Sachsenring crash - and said there was much more to come once he was back to full fitness.
