Reigning world champion Gabriele Tarquini won today’s second World Touring Car race at Curitiba, leading team-mate Jordi Gene home for a comfortable SEAT 1-2. Gene leapt ahead of pole-sitter Tom Coronel off the line, with the Dutchman then spinning out of the race at the second corner following contact with Alain Menu. BMW looks in good shape for today’s opening round of the World Touring Car Championship at Curitiba after its two cars set the pace in the morning warm-up. Andy Priaulx and Augusto Farfus only qualified sixth and seventh for today’s first race, but the BMW has topped most sessions so far this weekend. Yvan Muller will start his first race for Chevrolet from pole position after snatching the top spot in the final seconds of qualifying at Curitiba on Saturday. The former world champion was leading after the first round of quick laps in Q2, but the result came down to the last run of the session with nine of the 10 cars on track at once. Muller had to improve with his effort to fight off Jordi Gene who briefly went quickest.

Kris Meeke (Peugeot UK) is closing on victory in the Rally of Curitiba, having continued to edge away from nearest challenger Guy Wilks (Skoda UK) on the final morning. The gap between the two Britons is now up to 35.4 seconds, with both aiming to maintain their positions and have a conservative run to the finish. “It’s really pretty good at the moment - I’m just trying to stay on the road and take no chances,” said Meeke.

The World Touring Car Championship has launched a new rookie class for the 2010 season. Any driver who has not yet completed a full season in the series is eligible to score points in the Rookie Challenge, which they will run in as well as the overall and/or independent classes.
